An Update

It's been a while. I know.

When I first launched this site, the purpose was to create a stable, lasting archive of rare and bootleg material by The Get Up Kids; A way of helping other people avoid the long hours I and those like me spent scouring the dark corners of the internet tracking down live bootlegs of a band that doesn't get the same fanatical taping crowd as some of the larger, more ubiquitous acts.

And in a large part, it succeeded. Right now if you do a google search for "The Get Up Kids bootleg," this site is the first result. It also provides, to my knowledge, the most comprehensive archive of the band's bootleg and rare material to date.

However, in my previous post a few years ago, I gave the impression that this blog would come to take on a more editorial focus or be updated on a regular basis. Simply put, that was never the intent of the site. However, the lack of subsequent updates after that post gave people the impression that the site had been abandoned, and was no longer the "definitive source" for Get Up Kids bootlegs. The truth is, the site has never been dead, I just ran out of material. (And time, but college tends to do that to someone.) While I know there is more material in existence, it just became a matter of running out of ways to get it. Some of it is on VHS tapes in basements in Shanghai, some of it can only be found in passing references on old Geocities sites, and some rests with friends of the band who probably don't have the time or resources to make it available.

But this is important to say:

THIS SITE WILL NEVER BE DEAD SO LONG AS THERE IS MATERIAL.

I make a point to include my proxy email address in every post, so if there is someone out there who has means of getting ahold of something I don't have, I can help them make it available to the world. Many of the people reading this may likely have a show or rare recording that few others do, but will assume that it's widely available. But I implore you, even if you're sure you've seen mention of that Mesa, AZ recording somewhere, or you know someone must have shared that Reggie bootleg on another site; If you don't see it here, let me know. (Also, if you have photos from one of the shows listed here, those are also welcome.)

I and several others have spent countless hours researching, tagging and cataloguing every bit of audio we could get our hands on, and we intend to continue doing that so long as these recordings are made available. But I don't have the time to do it alone anymore, so I need your help. With your assistance, this site will continue to be the living, breathing resource it was always meant to be.

Thanks, and as always: If you have, or know of someone who has something that isn't listed on this site, please contact thegetupkidsarchive@gmail.com.

Site is not dead! More on the way.

Hello everyone! Sorry for the infrequent updates, but I can assure you that new stuff will be coming soon. I'm holding a few things back so that I can start releasing things weekly, which will hopefully start around the end of January. Be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed to get the most recent updates.

A few other things:
  • There Are Rules, the band's first album since 2004's Guilt Show, is coming out Tuesday! Some FYE stores are already selling copies, which is how I can tell you that it is absolutely incredible. You won't be disappointed. Blue Collar Distro is taking pre-orders for both the CD and vinyl editions of the album, as well as deluxe editions of each.
  • With a new album comes a new tour, which means new opportunities for bootlegs. However, please read my earlier post regarding our official policy on taping. (In short; Don't ruin the show for those around you, stop if you're asked to, and buy a shirt. They're nice shirts.) See the tour dates here.
  • I have re-uploaded a few of the files that weren't working. If you are still having trouble after re-downloading them, let me know.
  • If you haven't heard yet, Jim Suptic's side project Blackpool Lights has not only gotten back together, but released a brand new EP. It's superb, and available for only $5! You can either get it on iTunes or download it in FLAC or MP3 here. (Their fantastic debut album This Town's Disaster is also available on iTunes.
  • Remember to spread the word. Sites like these thrive on word of mouth, and with more support comes more new material for the site.
  • Don't forget about the forums!
  • As always, if you have something we don't, let us know at Thegetupkidsarchive@gmail.com.

An Open Letter to Our Australian and Japanese Readers

Hey everyone;

I'd like to post a quick reminder, and then shortly thereafter, ask for your help. As you may or may not already know, The Get Up Kids will be doing a brief tour of Australia, followed by three dates in Japan. The dates will be listed below, and I'm sure I don't have to tell you what great shows these will be. You're obviously here because you love the band, or at the very least have a passing interest in them, and if you have never seen them live, you are most certainly missing out. The Get Up Kids are famous for putting on an incredibly energetic and fun live show that could never be replicated by anything on this or any other site.

That said, here comes the part where I ask for your help. Now that the band has re-united, there is a new opportunity to make new live recordings of concerts for fans to have and enjoy, and you have the ability to help make that happen. There are countless places on the internet where you can find tips to help you record a concert, and many techniques available are rather low-maintenance. Any recordings made would be greatly appreciated, and as you know I always make a point to credit the original recorder and submitter whenever that information is available. You have the power to help this archive grow even more.

As I said before, the tour dates will be listed below. But first, I have a few VERY important notes:

1.) The Get Up Kids have always been extremely accommodating to their fans. If anything, this site is living proof of their willingness to help people who love their music. That being said, PLEASE do not take this as me saying "don't go to the concert, since it may be here later anyway." Not only is there no guarantee that that the show will even be recorded, but nothing will ever be able to replicate the experience of a live show. The vast majority of money made by bands comes from concert ticket sales and, especially in festival settings, merch sales. This site exists to give fans the broadest experience possible, but it also comes with the implication that you are supporting the band financially as well. So go to the show, buy a T-shirt or two and have some fun. If you record the show, that's great. If not, that's okay too. Just have a good time and continue using this site with the knowledge that you are helping support a great band.

2.) I make this request as a fan, but I must stress how important it is to look out for your personal safety. The Get Up Kids have said before that they are fine with fan bootlegs, but the same cannot always be said for venues. If you attend a show at a venue that explicitly forbids bootlegging, DO NOT RISK YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY TO RECORD THE SHOW. While many of us would enjoy hearing the concert, I cannot endorse any course of action that would get you in trouble or thrown out of a concert. It is also important to note that I make this request with little to no understanding of the legality of bootlegging concert in your country. Here in the United States, there seems to be a general rule of thumb that says if it is okay with the band, and it isn't sold, it's okay. However, I tried to do some research, but I couldn't find anything definitive on the legality of bootlegs in either Australia or Japan. PLEASE, if you plan on recording a show, look into the laws regarding doing so in your country. I do not advocate breaking any laws to get this content. That isn't to say it is illegal in either of those countries, I just want to make it clear that I do not endorse any criminal activity to procure these bootlegs. Mostly it's just to cover my ass as well as yours. Just remember to be safe and have a good time.

With that said, here are the concert dates. I have included a link to each show's page on last.fm where you can get more information, buy tickets, and more.

Live At The Electric Lounge - Austin, TX (09-19-1997) [WITH VIDEO]

Type: Live Bootleg
Date: 09/19/1997
Venue: The Electric Lounge
City: Austin, TX
Other Acts: Mineral
Recorder: Unknown
Special Thanks: Samuel Miller

This recording, in addition to being the oldest full bootleg in the archive, is also the debut of a brand-new feature to the archive: Video. This show from right around the release of Four Minute Mile was graciously sent by Samuel Miller, the former proprietor of LightOfDay.com, the predecessor to The Get Up Kids Archive. He has also provided videos for two more shows currently in the archive, which will be highlighted in a new post shortly. However, in this modern age of flexibility, what matters is choice. That's why we are also providing the full audio of the show split into tracks and given the same treatment as an audio-only bootleg. Download one or download both, however you please.

And remember: In the past week we've not only gotten these amazing videos, but the rare On a Wire demos, all of which were contributed by readers of this site. If not for contributions from readers like you, this site would cease to exist. Thank you to everyone who has sent in tips, and if I haven't responded to your email, I apologize. I am making a point to respond to every tip received, even if it is one we already have, but I haven't quite gotten around to responding to everyone yet. Nonetheless, keep the tips coming, and thank you for using The Get Up Kids Archive!

Track Listing:
1.) Intro
2.) Don't Hate Me
3.) Better Half
4.) Off the Wagon
5.) Michelle With One "L"
6.) Shorty

Those songs are “All Eyes On the Liar,” “The End Is In Sight,” “Wings and Wheels,” “Through the Haze,” and “My Photographs,” which was performed at the Bottleneck show featured on this site, although it was listed as “All of You.” This is an amazing find and a must-have for any fan. Major thanks go to Michael B. for submitting these to us, as well as The-AMB.com for hosting the original files.
